Joy sounds so simple doesn’t it? The sun is shining bright through the window, your dog wakes you up with a big lick on the face, your significant other surprises you…that’s joy right? No, that’s happiness. Joy is deeper, joy is much more rare. Joy is a blessing taken for granted by many.
Joy is a fruit of the spirit: Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Meaning if we have the spirit of God we should have joy right?? Yes, but do we allow it to shine in our life like we should?…that is where many of us take a wrong turn. It’s so easy to be happy and cheerful when life is going right, but the second things get frustrating or disappointing we get down, negative, upset. That is why happiness is temporal. Joy is an essence, we exude joy NO matter what’s going on in life.
Wait so when I have the flu I should be joyful? yes. When I just failed a test I should be joyful? yep. How about when the thing I want most, turns out won’t be mine? yes, even then. That, my friend, is why joy is so hard. And that is why we need to lean on God in the times when we feel like joy is the furthest thing from us.
Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the holy spirit.
Is it really that simple? What does that even mean?? Well…first we have to let him in and allow him to even give us that hope of His joy. That means we give up controlling what’s going on in our life that’s going wrong. We let him have it fully, and let him replace those broken/hurt/angry parts of us with his joy and peace. It may not happen overnight, it may take weeks, months..but life is a journey so why not start now on this one.
